I think it was summer of 1990. The Dead had this giant dancing skeleton set up next to the stage. It must have been 30 feet tall with red glowing eyes. For many of the concerts where it was set up, it wasn't working: I was told that the servos that ran it would get too hot. But when it did work, it was pretty cool!

A giant skeleton marionette - who would have thunk it.

Actually I don't. I believe you though. I saw most of the shows that tour and have absolutely no recollection of it. Perhaps a picture would spark my memory. There is probably one in the Illustrated History of the Dead or whatever the book is called that traces the history of the band month by month with lots of pictures.

Jerry's daughter, Annabella, was one of the operators of that puppet. She had a hand in its creation too. Is she not a puppeteer? I saw it at Rich (where it appeared during a stellar Truckin')and Three Rivers. It was indeed the summer of 1990. It may also of showed up at Tinley Park I'm not sure. It did not appear at Deer Creek.

Talking of giant Puppets---check out Royal Deluxe's show, Sultan's Elephant, at their website or go to the BBC website and type in Sultan's Elephant. An amazing three day event that I saw in London UK last April.

I went to see Pink Floyd in 1987 or 8----Learning to Fly tour, you know the one. First one without Waters. They burst into some song, falshpots, noise and up flys the famous Flying Pig! But it gets somehow lodged between the stacks and the catwalks and tumbles back down behind a speaker stack never to be seen again by a single person in the stadium. The band must play the song Pigless.

Class act, I thought.

I remember thinking that when the skeleton danced he (or she?!?) looked like he was picking his nose...

Never saw the dancing skeleton. I do remember the projections on the scrims stage left and right during summer '94 (I think it was '94, maybe some other tour), particularly huge, long dragons.
Summer '81: houselights out at show time and in the blackness that suddenly enveloped the audience, spotlights focus on a huge SYF some twenty-odd feet above the stage.
Simple, but very effective.
